Educating customers on the smart choices
Lytton's Appliance Showroom understands that, in today's economic environment, consumers need to make smart purchases. "We really listen to our customers," says owner Bob Finn. "Often, customers aren't aware of all the options available. We have the product knowledge to help them find the appliances to meet their needs, lifestyles and budgets. Sometimes it is difficult for customers to decide on the right appliance. We listen to them and pick up on their needs and then match them with the right products and price points. We help our customers take advantage of opportunities and make the smart choices."
Bob Lytton, Sr. opened Lytton's Appliance in 1955 with this same commitment to customer service. In 1999, Finn purchased the business from Lytton. "I saw it as an opportunity related to a 20-year relationship and partnership I had with the Lytton family promoting Amana appliances as a wholesale distributor," Finn says. "I knew they took good care of customers. They had a great reputation and I felt that we could continue the tradition of superior customer satisfaction."
From the store's own delivery crew to their experienced sales staff to custom installation-Lytton's commitment to service is based on meeting the customer's unique needs. Finn's industry experience and extensive product knowledge was a good foundation for operating a retail appliance business that puts customers first. "We are really focused on educating customers," Finn says, "and we're careful to explain all the features and benefits of the various products we sell."
How does Lytton's compete with the big box stores of today? It's all about providing value but with personalized service. "We belong to the national buying group AVB/Brandsource," Finn says. "It negotiates pricing with manufacturers to help its members compete with national chains. Bob Lytton, junior and senior were officers in the early days of the group and were instrumental in growing the membership which created that ability to compete in a low-margin business."
What does Lytton's Appliance provide that big chains don't? "Many times, customers come in, and they need a refrigerator today," Finn says. "We keep a large inventory, so we can offer same-day or next-day delivery. However, if we don't have the exact model that the customer needs, we provide loaner refrigerators until we can deliver. We really focus on the little details that keep customers happy. We know that we are partners with them in their purchase."
Currently, Lytton's Appliance is in the process of opening up a new clearance center at 2910 East Douglas, just around the corner from the Hillside location. The clearance center should open by mid-November, according to Finn. "This location will provide good value and price points for customers," Finn says. "I think that, with the economy the way it is, everyone is trying to stretch their dollars. Providing quality products at discounted prices is a great opportunity for customers and continues the Lytton's tradition of providing appliances at everyday low prices.
